What Is Aquaculture?

Aquaculture put simply is the farming of fish and other non-land animals such as aquatic plants, molluscs and crustaceans. This can be done in the natural environments that these creatures already exist by keeping them in a controlled area using nets (also known as Mariculture) or it can be done in specially built tanks in-land usually at a greater expense.

Aquaculture shouldn’t be confused with fishing which is basically the harvesting of wild fish, Aquaculture ensures that the conditions that the fish are raised in are monitored continuously.

It is generally agreed (based on loose statistics) that half of the fish we consume as humans comes from Aquaculture.
